The First Few Days.
On the 23rd of June 2017, me and a handful of other students from my university boarded a plane from London to Italy where we would be staying for the next 2 months. I think all our first impression’s of italy were the same, that it was unbelievabley hot! We had landed right in the middle of an intense heatwave and were all very shocked indeed! Luckily we had just caught the end of it, and it soon cooled down! We then were picked up by Tempo Libero and were dropped off at our various accomodations. My friend and I are living in a flat with 3 others, about a 10 minute walk away from the town centre of Brescia! We are living with another english girl, a spanish girl and a french boy. Although everyone was shy and awkward at first it has been great fun chatting with them and laughing over the cultural differences. We then had a meeting with Tempo where they gave us information packs about the city and our Internships. I have to admit, I found the first day very challenging indeed. With the combined elements of tiredness, heat and general uncertainty made the first day very overwhelming and I was dreaming of home. However, once I had gotten some rest, got settled in my flat and started my new job, I was absolutely fine and well into enjoying my internship.
My Work Placement.
For the first two weeks I was set to work at a library in a valley called Gardone Val Trompia which is further up in the alps. Although I was nervous at first, I soon jumped in head first. I was set the task of creating an informative video about the library and it’s various services that they offer. The people there were very friendly and helpful, they definitely made me feel very welcome. The journey up to Gardone Val Trompia worried me at first, as it consisted of 2 bus journeys totalling in about an hour and a half journey time! However the views from the bus were amazing making each trip up there feel like a sight seeing tour! I had great fun making the video as the library is a very interesting and historical building. I also loved getting to experience and visit yet another beautiful part of italy that isn’t terribly well known. Below is the video I made whilst i was working at the libary.
Travelling in Italy.
I have also travelled quite a bit since arriving, as my friend and I are eager to see as much italy as possible whilst we are here. We spent one of our first days exploring the city of Brescia and had a lovely day wandering around the Castle, the cathedral and the various shops. It was a good and effective way of getting used to italian customs, and working out the public transport around where we lived. It is also the first place we tried some real italian pizza and we totally blown away by how amazing it was! I have to say, although I have only been to a few places in italy so far, Brescia definitely would be my first choice for a permanent residence. I feel like it has all the beauty and culture of italy but without the hoards of tourists. The next weekend we adventured out to Desenzano, which is a town by Lake Garda. We were quite taken back by the beauty of the lake and the beauty of the town Desenzano. We also tried our first Italian Gelato here and once again, were completely swept away by the amazing flavours! It was unlike anything we had ever experienced! We then caught a ferry over to Sirminone which was amazing, we explored the castle and got some great views from the top of the tower! Last weekend, we did our first big trip to Venice which is about 2 hours away on the train. As expected, Venice was beautiful and a truly unique city. We had a wander around the canals, checked out Saint Mark’s square and ate a LOT of pizza and gelato! A particular favourite of mine was the Teatro la Fenice which was a theatre with the most amazing detailing and history. I also particularly loved the fabulous masks that were displayed around venice, I thought they were truly unique!
In a nutshell, the best part about italy so far is the pizza, the ice cream and the sights! My friends and I are already picking up some italian and therefore are finding it easier and easier to get by. I have experienced so much already in the last two weeks that I cannot wait for what is in store for the next 6!
